Hey John. I stored my main luggage at my accommodation in Santa Marta that I stayed before/after the trek. I don’t think the tour companies offer an option to store luggage though.

I have a some what silly question but can’t find an answer. You mentioned “Just a daypack should be enough for this trek”
But can I ask where is all your other luggage kept while you are on the 5day trek? And do you know if it is the same for the other trek tours too?

Thank you! The weather is a major factor if tackling something like this, if its raining most the time that makes it a very different experience and also requires better gear. Thanks for your insights!

I’ve only been in the Sierra Nevada at different times in the dry season, but I’ve mostly seen running shoes and normal hiking shoes. I went with normal hiking shoes myself which I simply took off when crossing rivers, which worked fine. Seeing as it’s currently rainy season though it might be worth checking with the tour companies if they have recommendations for footwear. The paths are very sandy in dry season and they could be very muddy now.

One thing I would like to know is about footwear. There isnt much out there about jungle boots and i was wondering if regular hiking boots/walking shoes are good enough or if it really needs to be army surplus jungle boots if you arent going to be miserable. I’ve seen some people bring sandals for river crossings, hike in normal hiking shoes/boots, bring wellington boots for mud, even hike in running shoes. Interested in your insights about how you or your fellow hikers managed with footwear. Thanks!

I had the vaccine a long time ago so I didn’t really think about it. But as far as I’m aware, these days it’s only a requirement for Colombia if you arrived from Angola, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Uganda. But maybe check with the tour providers if they have any vaccine requirement.

I am planing to do the hike in July I am hearing conflicting opinions on the Yellow Fever vaccine. How was your experience? Did you have to get the vaccine? Is it required to do the hike? Thank you so much for all the info.

Hey Jennie. It shouldn’t be a problem. I was in the area in July last year (didn’t do the trek then, but hiked a lot in Minca) and the conditions are good. It’s not quite the dry season (Dec-Mar) but it’s not rainy season either, so overall it’s just ‘normal’ (e.g. there are some mozzies but not alarmingly so).

Thank you for this article. Thinking about doing the trek in early July. Any thoughts about doing the trek at that time of year, on a scale of muddiness and mosquitoes?
