IMPORTANT: this is for paid freelance work, NOT for sponsored or guest posts.
At Indie Traveller we regularly work with freelance writers. If you have valuable first-hand travel knowledge and want to share it at Indie Traveller, then read on!
Despite AI and recent search engine changes wreaking havoc on the blogging world, Indie Traveller is still doing fine and we’re still hiring. However, we do have a specific vision of the type of content we like to publish.
Indie Traveller is a 100% AI-free site, as we believe only human-written expert guides can be of genuine use to other travellers. Our aim is quality over quantity, with content written by travellers for travellers.
We work a bit differently than some other sites, so please have a look at our editorial policies page to see if it resonates with you!
Relevant topics
As a rule of thumb, any commissioned articles need to be complimentary to what is already on the site. Have a look at the Destinations menu to see what we’ve covered so far.
Indie Traveller has a particular focus on:
- Southeast Asia
- Many countries in Latin America
- The Balkans
In order to be a good editor and have plenty of photos available, I (Marek) need to have travelled to the country first. There are some exceptions to this guideline, but generally we don’t consider any pitches that are far outside our existing areas of focus. (E.g. we don’t do Canada, USA, or Western & Northern Europe).
We generally let writers suggest topics they know well based on their own experience. If we like working together, then there is potential to be a regular contributor.
Writing style
You must be able to write practical, user-friendly articles. We don’t worry too much about Search Engine Optimization, however we do place huge importance on ‘optimizing for humans’. For example, online readers often skip dense paragraphs, so it’s essential to keep things crisp and scannable.
Articles should, first and foremost, help a fellow traveller discover a new place. However, adding some of your subjective experiences or anecdotes can help make a travel guide more engaging and inspirational and we allow (in fact, encourage!) first-person perspective.
Ideally, you should already have some writing experience. If so, please mention your past work, your own blog, or your writing portfolio. (Several of our authors also have their own blogs, which is fine so long as we won’t compete on the same topics.)
If you’re a local/resident in the region or you’re a long-term traveller who spends longer in places than the typical tourist, then this is a big plus.
Payment
Our base rate is $0.07 per word. Payment is timely and reliable.
